post office By Julianne

Lisa, we've done this in our first grade. For mailboxes I went to the local liquor store and asked for divided boxes. They come with four, six, or twelve dividers. I took two of the 12 divider boxes and covered them with| paper. Then I hung names from the top of each section. They have served us for a couple of years now and cost almost nothing. I also like the previous poster's idea of envelopes on the desks. We have tables, though, so it wouldn't work for us. A couple of other things we've done with our post office: We use the stamps that come with magazine offers (pub. clearing house, etc) as | | stamps for our envelopes. We also have someone act as postmaster and "cancel" the stamps with a rubber stamp before delivering our mail.We have a post office area where students work selling stamps, stationary and envelopes to other students during our centers time. We charge a few cents for each of these items so the activity becomes a math problem. We use real pennies because they're less expensive than the fake ones! We try to write letters to our students throughout the week so that they all get some kind of mail. I find I can make a child's whole day by just putting an "I like you" note in their mailbox. I also get some great letters in return.
