completely different, but fun idea

Your social studies ideas sound great. I also have a different spin. I haven't tried this myself, but I do vividly remember 2 letter writing projects from my own 5th grade experience:

1. We chose a favorite or least favorite company and/or product and wrote to them in business letter format. It was fun to wait for return mail, as many students received free samples, discount coupons, etc.

2. We each wrote and performed, on audio or video, a commercial (for the same or different product). We sent the tapes, along with a business letter as a written proposal stating why the company should consider our concept for an upcoming commercial.
