When I wrote back, I wasn't sure if you meant "Riddle of Penncroft Farm" or "George Washington's Socks." "Riddle" is a long paperback. I would only recommend it if you have very good readers. There is a lot of vocabulary in there which pertains to the times, plus a dialect from the times: 'tis, etc. This needs to be explained. What we read in class was the basal reader excerpt of the novel. It was not at long, and it gave the kids a feel for how people would have lived during the times.

As for the George Washington book, I wouldn't hesitate to use this paperback with fifth graders. It is not a difficult book.
