state history made interesting By Carolyn

Hi, Barb,I teach in SC. I have found a number of really nice materials to use for teaching history of the state. I am sure you could do this, too. One thing you can try is visiting a visitor center in Ohio. I did this in South Carolina, and the visitor center helpers helped me find some historic literature--pamphlets and brochures--for various places in the state. These were free, since the towns encourage visitors to visit them. They are colorful and interesting for the children.Another thing you could do is write to your state governor, a state legislator, the governor's wife, the state's | | historical society, etc. You can get a lot of things this way, and the kids could get the practical experience of letter writing to a real person. One class I had one year wrote to the state governor's office and obtained a number of interesting state history items, among these were items about the Civil War (the Civil War started in SC). They also obtained a recipe from the governor's wife. Our local DAR gave us additional materials. Check the Internet, also. There are a lot of fun and exciting possibilities here. This could turn out to be a wonderful teaching and learning opportunity.
