It all depends By Cathy-Dee

I would think it often depends on the school systems themselves. I have only taught in public schools, but I have several friends who have taught and are teaching now in private schools.- Private schools sometimes have | less money for staff, resources, etc., Plus they may have a smaller student population. Thus you will see more split grades, etc., which tends to be more work. - However not all public schools are ideal either - some have large class sizes - some do have supervision (like my school, even during the lunch hour) - some have poor resources - etc., I would say that you are more likely | | to have a straight grade in the lower grades, but in the jr/sr high grades it is fairly common to teach 2 to 4 grade levels, and sometimes even more than one subject.Probably the best thing for you to do would be to check into the schools in your area. See if you can come in to take a look, or phone and ask the school what types of positions they may have available next year. See if they have a school web page - you can learn a lot from their web page. As far as long hours - that often comes with the territory of being a new teacher. Regardless of which school system you work in - you should find your second year a little less time consuming (especially if you teach the same grade or subject).
