sounds a lot like my day

Jeanne, I think we have both learned a valuable lesson. I think that what we will both need to do next year is send home a note to parents which requests that NO candy be brought in. Hopefully, no "nice" parents will send
candy anyway. If a child shows up with candy, I will confiscate it and return it at the end of the school day. I know this sounds horrible, but like you say, how can you teach with all of that stuff on their minds? Valentine's Day is an instructional day, too. It should be treated as such. It should not be an excuse for kids to go wild, which is what they do the moment they hear
the "P" word. If the parents complain about it, I'll suggest that THEY try to make a go at trying to hold down AND teach 25 sugar-crazed kids.

As far as valentines go, I think we could ask that the children write a letter of appreciation to a classmate and deliver it to him/her. I did this with my students when I taught second grade. Instead of kids bringing in the same old boring prepackaged valentines that millions of other kids bring in, the kid-designed valentines would be more special and more meaningful.
