Rewards
By Kathy Westermeyer

Clip to ScrapBook
One reward I used when I was team teaching the upper grades (I'm a primary teacher) was tickets. You know, the kind they use for fairs with 2 parts. I would give them the "Keep This Coupon" section and put the other in
a big container. Every so often I would pull out a ticket and read the number. The student who had the matching one got the prize. (Food seemed to be a great motivator for this age group.) They seemed to love it--and it was a very manageable system since I wasn't their classroom teacher.

I would give tickets for various behaviors I was trying to encourage--occasionally for good work

or right answers to difficult questions. I used the reward randomly so they never knew what they were going to get a ticket for. Also drew tickets once or twice a week--again they never knew when. At the end of the period (9 weeks) anyone who had a specified number of tickets got a small treat and I would start all over again. (That way everyone who had been cooperating got some kind of reward--and we didn't get such a backlog of tickets.)

I did this for three years--and every group enjoyed it.
