Math Enrichment Yes Read Me! By Michael

Yes the child needs some extra help! In the school the I teach in we have to differentiate the curriculum so that we are always teaching 3 different levels all the time. It is difficult at first. The advanced group works| a little more independently than the other groups. We differentiate the curriculum from kindergarden up to fifth grade. In the advanced group we do a lot of critical thinking and that is really what they need. When I am differentiating the curriculum for my classroom I always find that my high group needs to constantly work on "working in small groups". It doesn't matter whether I | | have two or four or six students in that group the students really have to learn to work together in that group because that is were they lack their skills. Most of the students who are in the high group have good working and studying skills it is the area of cooperative working. The students can do the work if you give it to them and give them time. The students will take more time if they work together. This is kind of the opposite with what happens in the other groups with my experience. In the other groups they work together and help each other. In the advanced group they all think they are right and someone ends of crying. Not in the other groups though, at least not as often. I think a small group of excelled students working together on critical thinking topics and excercises and having the students use their work or examples reflect real world experiences or applications and they can either post this in a local newspaper, present it to the class or grade level, or present it to the community. There are endless options, this is just one area that our school concentrates on. Please email me if you have any questions or if I can futher explain anything. It's a little difficult to explain on here. Good Luck! Michael Mookeritaliano@aol.com
