Personally, I do enjoy the Lemony Snicket books, although they are not literature. I kind of think of them as like junk food. HOWEVER, they have served a much needed purpose in my classroom. I rarely use the basal in my classroom, preferring actual novels. In my school district, reading is not usually promoted in the average home, so it is my job to instill a joy for it. I teach in a very large school and we have many titles for classroom sets. Some of these titles are a little antiquated though. An eleven year old African American boy is not necessarily going to learn to love reading with Anne of Green Gables (although it is one of my favorites!) I got a good deal on the first book in the Lemony Snicket series from Scholastic so I bought a class set. I used it as an introductory novel at the beginning of the year and the response floored me. My students begged to read another Snicket book but I have so much else I want to share with them (we're reading Holes now). So instead, more than half of my students have gone out on their own and bought these books. In short, Lemony Snicket books may be junky, but when it gets reluctant readers to read in their free time, WHO CARES???
