    Am I a Children's Lit Nut???

YEP! I have a collection of children's lit from when I was a child and just never stopped buying or reading it. My husband just shakes his head. I am trying to get a masters in reading, but with two children ages 8 and 5, I can only take one class at a time, so it is ssslow going. Both my girls love books -- they have to survive in my house, I guess -- and I am constantly reading to keep up with them and my class.

My favorite children's author -- oh, that's a tough one. For picture books, number one is Patricia Polacco, closely followed by Bill Peet and Barbara Cooney and some Eve Bunting.

For beginning and emergent readers, I like Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House books for emergent readers. I also love Cynthia Rylant's early readers -- Poppleton, Henry and Mudge, Mr. Putter and Tabby. In fact, I like most of Rylant's work -- across the spectrum.

For middle readers, I like Louis and I just don't think you can go wrong with Beverly Cleary. I also have recently discovered, thanks to my 8 year old Kimberly Brubaker Bradley -- good historical fiction.

For better readers, now that's where I really have difficulty -- I love Lois Lowry (especially Number the Stars, The Giver, and Gathering Blue), Brian Jacques (one of my 8 year old's favs, too), Susan Fletcher, Will Hobbs, Jerry Spinelli, and my newest find Joan Bauer (I think Rules of the Road is one of the best books I've read. I also loved Backwater and Hope was Here).

I have not read any of Roland Smith's books, but will look them up at the library.

I noticed that you were reading Guiding Readers and Writers. I also am a professional book nut! I haven't read that one yet, might have to see if I can get it. I would love to join the discussion. As you can see though, I can get rather long winded!
