Sorry, too.

Clip to ScrapBook
I don't mean to be negative about a program that I have not used in my own classroom, but I speak as a grandmother of children who, by every formula for reading success and based on reading experiences at home, should be
avid readers but are not.

All my grandchildren attend school in a district that uses AR. None of my grandchildren love reading. When we spend extended time together in the summer, we've always gone to the library together, chosen great books, found some secluded outdoor or cozy yet cool indoor place to settle in and read together. This is what I began to hear from them as they continued

in the AR program. "Yes, Meme, I'd love to read that book, but it would be a waste of my time because it's not on our AR list." Up through grades 4 they read and loved it, but after those tender years whose experiences should have nurtured a love for reading, they have grown to read only when required and only what's required.
