strategies
By reading teacher

Clip to ScrapBook
Scholastic put out a book a year or two ago called Strategies that Work (something close to that anyway). I have found it particularly helpful. There was a page that I copied for parents that we handed out at our literacy
fair that had skills that are taught at grade levels from grades 2-6. We then showed parents strategies at our fair that dealt with these skills. You might want to look for that book.

Also, Marie Clay's Guide Book to Reading Recovery has some good strategies in it. One of the things we say to students : Does it look right, does it sound right? Now, some of my first graders, after

having read something will say to me "That doesn't sound right" or that doesn't make sense"! The first time that happened to me I nearly jumped up and did a dance!

The key to teaching strategies is to get the parents using the same strategies at home. This is not easy, but we have started an annual Family Literacy Fair at our school. I have done workshops on these. E-mail me if you are interested in more information.

Happy Holidays.
