    Rituals and Routines

Rituals and Routines are the basic regulations and routines of the classroom. For example, students (by now at least) in my classroom should know that they are not allowed to get out of their seats without raising their hands and being recognized by teacher. This would have to be in place for Guided Reading groups to take place! Other kinds of Rituals and Routines include procedures for turning in homework, classwork, procedures for passing out materials, etc. These are things that you teach at the very begininning and focus on so that you can effectively run your classroom. Being new at this (first year) I TRIED to implement things that should have worked, however, I have a class that includes too many students that still feel that they can do what they want to do when they want to do it! Unfortunately, we are still dealing with this in December. Life does go on, and I hope that we can make a fresh start in January. By the way, I just received a full set of copies of the teacher's guide (a small packet that includes one or two pages of questions, ideas, etc to guide instruction) for Guided Reading Levels Q through T (fifth grade level) I know of colleagues who have M through R (fourth grade level) etc. Let me know if this would help any of you.

Look forward to discussing all of this great program with you all! God Bless- Erica
