a positive of ability grouping
By laura

Clip to ScrapBook
I also teach fourth grade. I group my students by ability level. I find it is helpful to have students working on the same strategies at the same time etc. After a group has finished a novel, they prepare a class presentation.
They share some of their favorite quotes, create a " graffiti" poster and tell their connections with the book. This way all levels get to hear their thinking and other students may be inspired to read the book. I find that my lowest learners actually give the most interesting reports. They are much more likely to think " out of the box" and are proud of their accomplishments.
Most of the reading group books I use are historical fiction so that any level of learner can find more information on the topic at their own reading level.
