Clip to ScrapBook
Hi. I have some ideas. I am reading this with a group of 5th graders right now actually:
--In the story Leigh is writing letters to his favorite author. Have your students do the same. Your librarian should have some addresses.
--Leigh
switches to writing in a diary. Have your students keep journals.
--Leigh gets his lunch stolen. Have your kids make a burglar alarm for his lunchbox.
--Leigh goes to the butterfly trees when he is feeling "down". Writing assignment: Where do you go when you're sad or angry? What raises your spirits? (Descriptive Writing) Also make tissue paper stained glass butterflies.
--Have
your students keep track of Leigh's Dad's truck rides across the country--using a map of course.
--In the story Leigh and his parents used to make up silly songs about lost articles on the highway. Have your students do the same.

Compare and Contrast Leigh and yourself.
Comapre and Contrast Bill and Bonnie Botts.
