A wonderful resource for ideas is "Lessons From Charlotte's Web and Other Neat Places" by Susan Rewis (a Fearon Teacher Aids publication). It is a bridge between both whole language and basic skills. My class is presently reading "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" and is using the activity pages from Rewis' guide.
