Try Fountas and Pinnell's book Guiding Readers and Writers (Heinemann) or Literature Circles and Response by Hill, Johnson, Noe (Christopher Gordon). Oh, I forgot a key book, Grand Conversatons by Peterson and Eeds (Scholastic-out of print but easily available thru a used book supplier) I agree with you, the idea of assigning roles is not conducive to a genuine dialogue. Also, join us in a conversation on the book GR & W which can be found through the link at the top of the book board titled 'Teachers As Readers'. Hope to 'see' you there. ;-D
