rice
By Joan

Clip to ScrapBook
When I taught fifth grade we had a great time with the story, The King's Chessboard, which is pretty much the same as One Grain of Rice. The kids actually did the hands on rice counting, realizing quickly that the numbers
soon became too big for counting, and began computing. But, one of the funnest parts of the lesson was a homework assignment for parents. A letter went home to parents as follows:
If (child) agreed to do the dishes every day for a month, which payment plan would you prefer to use? $10.00 each day, or a penny on the first day, then doubling the amount daily for the month. So
many parents chose the latter without putting much thought or time into it. The childen really got a kick out of it. It was fun for them to go back to their parents and show them how much they would end up paying after choosing the latter.
