The Giver activity
By Christina Willey

Clip to ScrapBook
Here is what we did with my college class:
We took colored construction paper, and hung it in various places around the room. We gave each member of the class a set of index cards, on each card was the name of a color,
and a pencil. The students then had a specific amount of time at each color station to write down all of the emotions/words they could think of that were inspired by looking at that particular color. Once finished with each color, we discussed as a class what each color meant to us. What emotions and inspiration was lacking from Jonas' world without color? We even went into what each
color actually means. One thing we thought about was the index cards they wrote on, we didn't want them to have the word red written in green or black, and we didn't want the construction paper to be in a busy area. We wanted our classmates to focus on the color at hand, so we sent them to the hallway where the colors are less distracting. (but then again I've yet to see a college hallway that was anything other than muted brown or white)
Hopefully this helps or at least gives you a different direction to take your class. I can't remember off hand where I found this activity, so the original source remains unknown.
