novel reading
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach fifth grade, too. I believe in a combination of teacher-led reading and independent reading. I will begin the week by teaching the skill(s) I will focus upon all week. If I am teaching conflict and character feelings,
as I did this week, I will read one chapter aloud, stopping to do a think aloud with the skills I am trying to teach. I will ask questions about the story relating to the skill. Then I will let the kids read independently to practice the skill I am trying to get them to learn.

I think it's important for children to learn to read independently. I think that by reading aloud

to them at first, then discussing the story, you increase their comprehension for the independent reading which is to follow. Oftentimes, once my kids get started with the reading, predicting, etc., they will read silently beyond what I assign.
