Poetry Unit
By Lori 2

Clip to ScrapBook
Hi,

I am currently trying to rework my poetry unit to utilize Love That Dog. I do the poetry unit in April which is Poetry Month. A local book store also sponsors a poetry contest each year where young poets come and
read their poetry for the public. Some poets I always try to work in are Dickinson, Frost, and Silverstein. I also do story poems by Longfellow (The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere -- which takes place in April! and Hiawatha), Thayer (Casey At the Bat), Whittier (Barbara Fretchie). I have each of these in a picture book format. In addition, each student must memorize a poem of their choosing.
We work on reading the poem with fluency in our individual reading workshops for two to three weeks, by which time they usually have it practically memorized fairly easily. Let me get my ideas a bit straighter with Love That Dog and I'll be glad to share.

Lori
