Making Connections
By Lori 2

Clip to ScrapBook
Elaine, you are so right about letting our students see the connections we make with literature. It has always come so naturally to me that I never thought that some children did not know to make those kinds of connections
until I started teaching. (I worked in the medical field before teaching.) The last two years I have used another of Barbara Parks' books to illustrate personal connections -- I had to take care of my Grandmother after a stroke when I was in high school since my mother worked. In The Graduation of Jake Moon, Parks tells of a boy who must take care of his grandfather who has Alzheimer's
disease. It really brought back memories when I read it and is a wonderful intergenerational novel. Students really know when the "connections" we make in our think alouds and class presentations are authentic.
