Hi Leigh,

Good luck on your interview! I am a fourth grade teacher who also sits on our school interview committee. Here are some questions we usually focus upon for our intermediate grades:

1. Describe your behavior
management/discipline plan. Know in your head what your expectations will be and be prepared to tell the interviewers how you will set up this plan: will it be a class meeting to establish rules/consequences, will you use a designated program like Lee Canter's Assertive Discipline? What types of rewards and consequences will you establish? What will you do for severe/chronic problems?
Think beyond stickers and turning cards and investigate some sort of token economy if you are not sure where to go with this.

2. How will you teach reading? Have a clear cut idea of how you plan to teach reading. If the school uses a series, what will you do to enhance it? How will you challenge? Remediate? If the school does not use a series--how will you know what to do--make references to some resources like Guided Reading, Integrated Literacy--whatever the district is "into" if it fits your philosophy. Same for writing.

3. Think about how you will integrate science and social studies into the language arts curriculum. Think about themes that can be addressed in all subject areas.

4. Consider how to use centers, manipulatives, or cooperative learning at this age level---these activities will need to be more complex and a bit more independent at this level.

5. Some killer questions:

How will you assess student performance both formally and informally? Give specific examples. Focus your responses on observations, classwork, formal tests, writing samples, portfolios, etc.

When would you contact a parent and for what reasons? Focus on both negative and positive issues.

If you had an assistant or aide in your classroom, how would you use that person at this grade level (reteaching, 1:1 aide, organizational support for students, etc.)

Finally, think about those last two or three questions that are often inevitable: what are your weaknesses/strengths and what questions do you have for us. Also, if necessary, familiarize yourself with the schools standardized tests/state test policy--scoring, rubrics, etc. I hope this helps.
