extra hours
By Jessica

Clip to ScrapBook
I am a special education teacher. I put in a many hours. I am almost always the first person here (a good hour before I have to be) and I usually stay about 30mins after, making my hours 7:30-4:30. I take work home on the
weekends and put in some time Friday nights and a little on Sundays. I have 10 kids to plan four subjects for, all individualized. I also plan centers. I have an aid who does my copying, laminating, and some of my centers. She also helps out in the classroom. I do not get a plan period. I have children with me from 9am until 3:30pm every day!! I am able to take a 30min lunch by combining
my class with another spEd teacher. I do not grade papers, but check them as they are completed. Rarely do I give tests (unit teaching is very complicated to special ed children). However I have a TON of documentation to do daily as well as behavior charts to keep track of. IEPs to follow (and keep track of how often I teach each goal...most children have 15 objectives within four goals). There's lots of communication between social workers, psychologists, children services, doctors and, of course, parents. Not a week goes by that I don't talk to one of these for each of my students.

I don't feel like I put in too much of my time. I'm more worried about how much money I've spent developing a classroom to operate smoothly and efficiently.

My apologies for rambling. I didn't realize I had so much to say.
Jessica
