I have been reading the posts on the vent boards with interest and a great deal of sadness recently. As a crusty oldie (in age but not in outlook) I have read the letters from a few of the first years and been wondering what
has happened. I have always enjoyed reading the posts and replies and have answered many myself on various boards. As a teacher in Ireland, the fascination for me has been to read about your problems and see how similar they are to ours. I had hoped that by adding my wee bit now and again I might even bring something new to the discussion and I have enjoyed being able to participate

from thousands of miles away. I, too look out for names I recognise. Now I think twice before I reply as I don't feel so comfortable any more. I would be waiting for a comment such as "What would you know, you don't even teach here." The teachers in the rooms next door to me are both just beginning their careers and I help them whenever they ask, but would never assume to give advice where it wasn't asked for. I just remember when I started out that I was really left to my own devices and had very little support. If I had had a vent board or busy board to visit, it would have made my life so much easier. That is why I try to help. Helping young people in difficulty is the essence of our existence. I hope the anger so obvious on the other board will subside. Goodwill to all men (and first years too.)
