Thanks for your responses. The mtg was not great. Basically they object to slavery being taught to fourth graders in any way, they say that they are not capable of understanding the emotional side of it. (Guess my degree doesn't really qualify me to determine what they can and can't understand). It has been a frustrating day. They are now going to challenge the textbook, course of study, etc.... I appreciate your positive responses.
I too was taught in college that we should focus on multiculturalism and allow students to understand the feelings behind history. What in the heck are we supposed to do???? Allow every parent to pick and choose what in the curriculum might be too sensitive for their child. Thanks for letting me vent.
