I agree with the poster above. Have the students help each other. I do have another suggestion. Put the students in groups. According to what you are doing they can be by ability or otherwise. You can teach a short induction lesson to the whole group. Then have the little groups do activities related to the subject. They can do research by reading books at various levels, internet, encylopedia, etc. The different groups can do different activities according to their ability or interest. You will find that you will begin to have a better idea what they can and can't do. As well as what they like and don't like. This may be more work for you in the beginning, but it may be worth it.
