I've received many emails concerning shutting down classrooms. I feel like a consultant!! (Wish I made that kind of money!) Nonetheless, for those of you who are considering shutting down your classrooms,
4. Don't worry about the "nonbehavior problems." Although they will silently suffer along with the rest of the class, they will benefit the most from the shut down! Inwardly they understand why you've decided to make the drastic move. 5. EXPLAIN WHY THE ROOM IS SHUT DOWN and what your expectations will be. Any deviation may be of no affect. 6. GO WITH YOUR GUT! You will KNOW when to reopen your room. If after reopening your room behavior hasn't changed, you didn't shut down LONG ENOUGH!! It's going to hurt and many of your collegues will begin to "talk." Like I had stated in my original post, "IT GOT UGLY!!" (And I'm not just talking about in my classroom) I'm still feeling the repercussions from my decision to shut down. My parents were actually more supportive than many of my colleagues. I DID WHAT I FELT I HAD TO DO!! No one was in my room all day everyday to see the disrespect and other behaviors that were displayed! I don't regret for one minute what I did. I know what I'm able to do now! I believe if I hadn't shut down my room, it would be sometime in April before my class would have reached this level of academic responsibility! With the holidays fast approaching, I would recommend that you take a LONG look at the remediations that you tried and begin the new year (if necessary) with a SHUT DOWN!! I wish you all a safe blessed holiday season!
