Thanks, Jan, for sharing this. What you said about adults not being good in everything really makes so much sense. We need to help children realize that they are in school to find out what they are good at and how they
can be of service to others.

Having said that, I also think it's important to keep working with kids on the basics. Writing is a great example. Some kids are always going to be better at writing than others--but that doesn't mean that those who aren't fluent writers shouldn't try to improve. Part of education is also trying new things. So I don't think it's good to just say, "Oh,

I can't do that. It's not what I'm good at."

I do agree with you about students realizing they don't have to (and won't) excel in everything. That should take a tremendous burden off kids. In fact, I'm going to share that with a parent during parent-teacher conference this week who is worried because her child is not doing well in a couple subjects. (He's getting average grades.)
