I don't have any real solutions but would it be possible for you to do any of the following:
a)when he unpacks his bookbag each morning, have him show you it is empty, then have him store it at your desk until pack up
time. When it is time to pack up, have him bring his books to you and you can watch him pack. This would have to be sort of "subtle" perhaps with some sort of comment that you are worried that he is not bringing home the necessary things at the end of the day or you are worried that he is bringing home too many things--check with your principal on this one first though, so as to not violate
any rights related to "searching a backpack." b) can he have a desk that does not have any type of opening--like the ones with a basket under the seat or a table--this would prevent him from hiding things in his desk c) if he is taking little things like school supplies, I wonder if it would help to simply replenish those for him if you think it is an issue and give him a special place to store them during the day--if he knows the items are available he may not be enticed to steal. I don't know. I have never had to deal with a "thief"--but maybe one of these suggestions could be a start. Good luck.
