I don't think you need a 'traditional' text to be a great mathematics teacher. Pick up a copy of the new Principles and Standards document from NCTM as well as Cognitively Guided Instruction (also co-published by them). Personally, if I had to choose a math program, I'd go with Investigations (a TERC publication) but that's from the far left...I'd rather do my own thing with realistic/authentic problem solving, and math games to promote strategic thinking. Best of luck whatever you choose. ;-D
