Volunteering is good for students By Beth

I used to feel the same way you are feeling.... until I went back to school for administration. I recently spent time self reflecting why these teachers used to frustrate me so much. Everybody's reasons are different but what I realized about me was I was feeling somewhat guilty for not devoting more time to schoolwide activities. At the time, I felt my students needed me. I spent most of my early career being the very best classroom teacher I could be... and still enjoying my early twenties! A program in administration can be very demanding. It requires you to be involved in many schoolwide activities |
| and take any leadership opportunities that are offered to you. I find myself volunteering for many activities that I never had an interest in before... (some I still have no interenst in!) Many teachers have made comments to me such as, "Get a life" or "Who am I trying to impress?" I just ignore those teachers and realize they are not where I am in my career. Unfortunately, not everyone with a degree in administration can be an "effective leader." A lot of times, teachers who can not handle their own classrooms, will not be able to "lead a school." I would not spend time worrying about if she is going to be your school's next VP. A lot can happen in a short amount of time. Just be the best teacher you can be and be glad you have teachers who do volunteer to do the things you do not want to do. (No matter what their motives are!) Afterall, teachers volunteering can only be good for your students school-wide!
