I'd have to agree I'm not in favour of split grades, unfortunately in some of our smaller schools they are just part of our reality.I have always found that the hardest subject to teach within a split grade is math. If | you can convince your Principal, see if there is someway that one of the grades can be taught by someone else just for math. Language arts can easily be taught together - especially with the older grades since there usually is such a wide variety of levels already in a class. Here in Alberta, usually what happens with social studies and science is one curriculum is taught the first | | year and the following year, the other grade's curriculum is taught. This can work, but only if the classes stay split for a few years. See what type of ideas your Principal has on which subjects and topics you will need to cover.Although split grades are challenging I agree with Mike that your Principal wouldn't have put you there if she didn't feel you could handle it. And she also probably thought it would easier to find a grade 2 teacher. I'm going to have to think hard about that idea you had
