strikes and cold weather By Cathy-Dee

I don't know somehow talking about strikes and cold weather just seems to go hand in hand.-26 tonight they are saying. And this is still not bad, I usually have to survive a couple of weeks sitting at -38 to -45. As | far as strikes, we haven't had one in Alberta for awhile. I'm not sure how effective it will be except that it may be province wide in the end. Things are definitely heating up. Part of this is attributed to the hefty raises the Alberta Goverment gave it's doctors and nurses to keep them in Alberta and make them the highest paid. Then they said teachers were next but when it came down | | to things, they backed right down and offered 6% over 2 years and were not willing to look at classroom situations, special ed funding, etc., so the teachers were not happy. Our union is quite strong and very vocal and right now we have the support of many of the public but who knows once a strike starts. Edmonton public has voted to strike in January and a few more boards may jump on board to force the government's hand. With us, no one has to walk a line, we simply do not go to work so other than a big drop in pay the strike will not be too much of a hardship on most of us. Those of us who are single will suffer more than those with another income. But I can survive for awhile anyway. I don't think work to rule would be too effective (I know the BC teachers are doing this and I haven't heard of any changes happening yet). I guess now it's a wait and see situation.
