Clip to ScrapBook
My first thought was to take the six-trait posters down or cover them up with something. This would nip the reading off the posters in the bud.

Beyond that, could you do some predicting? Show them the cover of the book your going to read and then ask for what trait they feel the book is going to be about and why.

What about having the students choose a book to fit a trait? They can read it to the class and then discuss. ????

Also, student teaching isn't forever. I imagine almost every student teacher has something they feel is redundant (at the very least) in their class. Patience is a virtue. You won't have to do it in your own class. :-)
