what, how, and why
By Christy

Clip to ScrapBook
I was actually required to write my philosophy of education 3 or 4 times over the course of my program-- each time with a completely different emphasis. However, at the end of my final student teaching practicum (I'm a double
major and did 2), I had to write an overarching philosophy including everything-- a 15 page paper with documented sources. It was a HUGE task, but my supervisor was very helpful in guiding us on it. First, she us write 3 separate journal entries -- WHAT to teach, HOW to teach, and WHY teach. Once we had these pieces, it was easier to find documentation and piece it all together.
Some of us kept these as their own sections in the final paper, and some completely mushed them together, but either way, it will really help clarify your thoughts. Another suggestion my supervisor made was to make your philosophy "available upon request" to interviewers, but include in your portfolio a short bulleted list of the highlights of your philosophy. This took me some time to set up, but I did it, and it was a HUGE hit at interviews! Good luck!
