Dear D:You've been out of school since 1988, but boy, do I have you beat! I'm back in school and hopefully will be ready for student teaching in Fall 2002, but I picked college back up after quitting a Geology major waaaayyyy | back in 1978! Talk about being an old timer--I sometimes feel like a fossil when I'm in class with all the young kids who make up the traditional population at my university. To my advanced age, add the fact that I'm attending an historically black university as a minority student. This means that I'm the only OLD white woman in almost all of my classes. I stick out like a sore | | thumb. But, you know what? Everyone has been really wonderful to me. I feel like I belong back in the classroom. And while I really didn't have a clear direction when I was in college back in the late 70's and made truly awful grades back then, NOW I'm focused on my goal of becoming a teacher and make great grades because I care about finishing school and getting on with my career. I couldn't have done that when I was still a teenager. Another thing, being older and wiser has helped in other ways. I have 5 daughters, 3 of whom I've helped find financial aid for college. That gave me the confidence to go beat the bushes and find out what was out there for me. If I can do it, so can you. Good luck.
