potty breaks By Carolyn

Yes, potty breaks are something that kids like to abuse!!! This applies to us full-time teachers, as well. One thing you seem to have already caught on to is the fact that kids want to escape from the classroom. If | they see an opening, they take it. One kid asks to use the bathroom and you let him/her go, then all of a sudden you see a bunch of hands shoot up and EVERYBODY claims to have a desperate urge to use the bathroom. Nothing like the power of suggestion!! My comment to the second child who asks is: "If you really had to use the bathroom, then you would have been the first one to ask." | | Or I simply tell them: "Not right now." That suggests to them that you understand their need to leave the room, but now is not a good time. Chances are great that the child won't ask you again. Also, if a child does ask to use the bathroom, tell him/her: "We will go to the bathroom soon." Or: "We'll all have a bathroom break in ten minutes (or on the way to lunch in a few minutes, etc.).Kids do like to test you on the potty break thing, probably because they know that their regular teacher(s) won't allow it.
