yes and no By DBB

To tell you the truth, I have seen both in my experience. I am a first year teacher, and we have an AWESOME sub who is in for someone just about every day of every week. Also, one day a week, she is a "roamer," covering| for approx. an hour in a series of classes while teacher are at IEP meetings (in my opinion, this would be an even more difficult job, bc you don't even get to keep the class all day, and timing is never clear, etc.). But she does it all with a smile on her face, and the kids all LOVE (and respect) her, and they get work done too! She is generally the first sub called, but there are 3 | | other regulars who are always called next, and the kids also know them well and do well with them. So, yes, I think it is a huge benefit! In the district where I student taught, however, we had 3 women who were employed full time as the building's consistent substitutes. They were there everyday as part of the staff over several years, and yet the children had very little respect for them, and they did not do well with the classes. In fact, I was often asked to take over a class, even when one of these women was available! So, honestly, I think that in theory, it has the potential to be really great, but it does depend greatly on the substitute and the situation
