Noise in the classroom
By Jami

Clip to ScrapBook
I always get nervous about noise level, too. If I feel that it's noisier than usual,I shut my door. The students are louder for a sub-it's just a fact I've learned to deal with. As a sub, you really can't be sure of how often
the regular teacher lets them talk or asks them to be silent- so I figure, why swim upstream. I think Carolyn put it well with her post, and that's what I strive for, too. There will always be the kids who talk anyway. I use a classwide points system, which encourages them to work together. They earn free time after a certain amt of points. It works!
The younger they are, the more
they talk. I find k, 1st and 2nd to be the noisiest. I let a lot more go for them then I do for the older ones. I pretty much demand silence for the older ones, except for co-op work.
My first day ever of subbing, I had a principal tell me that the only reason she checked up on me was because "the noise level was a little high"
Mind you, both times she had come in was once, right after recess, and again right after they came in from p.e. That was the only concern I've had in 2 years!!
