As far as rewards go, I don't mind using them - but I also do not mind teachers who do not use them. I feel it's important for everyone to find the system that works best for them. I like your idea of waiting to see how the class is going and then introducing the "reward" if it becomes necessary. Often this will depend on what the regular classroom teacher does. If the children are used to being rewarded for everything, then they'll expect it from you too. But if they are not, then you do not have to use the reward either. If you are going to be in the same class several times over the year - you might want to ask the teacher what they do so that you can follow their methods more closely. Meanwhile sounds like you are doing a great job! I wish we had more substitute teachers like you.
