And from a classroom teacher's perspective
By Cathy-Dee

SY has a good system in place. I would prefer that anyone who substitutes in my class take those few minutes to set the tone for the day. I often over-plan so I'm not expecting everything to get done, nor am I upset when
it isn't finished.
The only time I would be upset is if the substitute teacher did his or her own thing and totally ignored my plans. Thankfully this does not happen often.
It takes us a month or longer to get our classrooms working smoothly so any "good" classroom teacher recognizes that a substitute teacher may have to spend more time during the day working on the behaviors because
they haven't had that get-to-know you period of time.

As far as rewards go, I don't mind using them - but I also do not mind teachers who do not use them. I feel it's important for everyone to find the system that works best for them.

I like your idea of waiting to see how the class is going and then introducing the "reward" if it becomes necessary. Often this will depend on what the regular classroom teacher does. If the children are used to being rewarded for everything, then they'll expect it from you too. But if they are not, then you do not have to use the reward either. If you are going to be in the same class several times over the year - you might want to ask the teacher what they do so that you can follow their methods more closely.

Meanwhile sounds like you are doing a great job! I wish we had more substitute teachers like you.
