First of all let me tell you that I have been there. One thing is that I think sometimes students think that a half-day sub is a half-day off. They just can't handle a short term transition. That being said I have learned| that you need to come down hard on students who are disrespectful and not following directions. Sometimes I think students give you a "honeymoon" period when you first sub. When you come back you have to lay down the law because they are ready to test if they haven't already. Don't take it personally, I know it is hard. It is not because they did not like you, they just test to test. | | I have taken some suggestions from people on this sight that it is best to come on strong at first and lighten up later than vice versa. You said you wrote names on the board, then what? Maybe you could do something with more of a consequence for them. For example, keep them in for recess or tell them that you will give the teacher a full report. If that doesn't work, send them to the office. I have to admit that I have not sent anyone to the office yet, partly because I am not always familiar with the procedures, partly because the other stuff works. The bottom line is that they want to see what you will do when they are acting up. Show them that you still like them but expect a lot out of them. That's all I got. Good luck to you.
