Problems with substitute teaching By Kevin R. Fish

The big problem with substitute teaching is the crap from teachers and administrators. There is no support, and nothing but scapegoating. I quit subbing, and am now a charter high school teacher. The teachers and administrators| do not cooperate with subs as a team, and do not coordinate efforts. For example, they do not arrange for a specialist in a particular subject to sub in that class. My specialty is history. They do not crack down on the bad kids, like the one who claimed that an offer of off-campus tutoring at a public library was sexual harassment, and the kids who lied that I allowed strip | | poker in class. In fact, public schools are prohibited by the California Education Code and Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations from regulating off-campus tutoring, except if the students are not enrolled in public schools. Some teachers and administrators even claimed that recommendations to kids on places to hang out, like ice cream parlors, is sexual harassment. There was the administrator who threatened me with bodily harm, and the student advisor who told me to cover up gambling in class. There are other horror stories as well. The system is sick because of the ignorance of many teachers and administrators.
