Switching to subbing
By Ruth Lemmon

Clip to ScrapBook
At this time I am job-sharing a fifth grade class (I teach 3/5 days per week). I am planning on subbing next year in our hometown school district so I can be more available for our children and closer to home in case of a
disaster (natural, I mean).
I did sub many years ago, so I have a vague memory of what that was all about. I wonder if I will miss my own classroom, or if it will be better since I will be able leave the problems behind at the end of the day. No interventions to worry about, no parent conferences, no endless stacks of papers to correct, and the opportunity to say "no thank you" if I
need the day to myself or to go on a field trip with my child's class.
Luckily, in this area, substitutes are in HIGH demand and every teacher I speak to about my plan says I could be working every day if I want.
I'm looking forward to the change.
