Subbing in a Special Education Classroom By Melissa

I know what you are going through. I subbed in a special education classroom for a good part of the last week. Personally, I don't think that they should ask us to sub in a special education classroom if we are not trained| or certified in that area. By the end of the week, I just came home and cried. I had so much stress. The para had been absent one day, so they sent a new one, and the kids were really affected by having different people in the room. Even when the real para came in, I felt that she did not help me like she should have, and I felt that she was criticizing me. I was doing the best | | I could. I have faced the fact that it is harder to discipline students in a special education setting. I am not trained in it, and have decided that it is something that I do not want to do in the future. I was considering getting my masters in Special Education, but I have since decided not to. So, in a way, my experience was helpful. I love the children in the class, but I don't feel that it is fair to them or to myself for me to be placed in that class to take over as their teacher. I feel that you would be totally justified to not want to sub in special education classes again. It should not be held against you. They have to understand that it is a completely different experience from teaching in a general education classroom. Good luck!
