1st graders

Hi Jane,

The other active thread now raises a point - it would be great if several of the seasoned teachers could jump on this board and give us some good guidance on what they look for in subs.

I have one 1st grade teacher
who likes me so much that she has asked for me for future dates. Whenever I sub. at her school I always use free time to walk down, say "hi" to the kids and her, etc. She runs a tight room, behavior-wise. She has always provided me with information on the ones needing some closer attention. If you can get that, the lay of the room, etc. you should do well.

The fact that the kids

shared their classroom discipline says to me that this teacher does run a tight ship and expects their behaviors to carry over to you.

I've discovered that a bit of "bouncing around" by the kids seems to go along with them enjoying the class, you, etc. I think there is a fine line between this level of excitement and an out-of-control scene.

Based on my experiences (and affirmations from this and several other k-3 teachers) I think some of this excitement is just fine. I've learned to "go with the flow" as well. If the kids are excited, bouncing a bit, having fun and learning then there is nothing wrong with the picture!

With the little ones I also try to get outside with them at least 1 recess; they love the extra attention. I always tell them that I can do this because I do not have the prep. time their teacher has so can free up some time to have fun with them.

Best, Ken in Wisconsin
