What I look for in a sub...
By Aleshia

Clip to ScrapBook
Hmmm, well, let's see...

I want a sub who will be consistant with my discipline plan...I think it confuses the kids, especially in a case like mine where I am gone often (although hopefully not much longer!!!). I am not
talking about little things that they do to make the day go easier, but I leave a detailed plan on how I want the kids disciplined for bigger problems. I think because I developed this plan and stuck religiously to it is why my class is so well behaved. However, on the other side, I want to know if it DIDN'T work out well for them the day they subbed and would LOVE it if they'd leave
some tips. I am relatively new to teaching, and I know there is a lot to learn from those that have been out in the field more then I.

I also want a sub who isn't scared to chuck a lesson plan or revamp it if something isn't working...I definatly don't want them to have problems with the class/students or whatever simply because things are not going the way I laid them out. Initative is a big thing, I think. If it doesn't work, toss it or change it. The students will be better off for it.

I like it when my subs leave me messages about how things went...postive or not. I need to know these things.

I love it when I come back from being gone and hear about neat activities that the sub did with class that were NOT apart of my lesson plans. One flip side to a teacher being gone for a day is that it gives the kids a change to look at their day in a new perspective...that can be scary...some kids can't handle that, I know. I like that my bunch can, and I love hearing about neat activities/lessons the sub did during extra time or when something wasn't going right...I have a lot to learn, and I love to learn things that WORK...and who knows better then those that have been around for awhile? Besides, I think the sub deserves a chance to try out their own ideas whenever possible. I know I hated constantly sticking to old, dull lesson plans because of not being able to deviate from the lesson plans...I wouldn't want my subs to feel that way. As long as the basic content is covered, I don't really much care how the sub got it there...end results are best.

Those are the most important things when thinking about what I want in a sub for my classroom...Hope this is some info that is helpful!
