SUBBING EXPERIENCES By MELISSA

Hi Ken. Just wanted to say that I sub in New York and it is pretty much the same story. Somedays I get called for 3 different schools, and other days I sit home. I love the call aheads also and knowing when and where I| will be going for the day. In New York, the district office calls you unless a teacher requests you beforehand. I would say the best advice is to be nice to the secretaries because it is them that tend to book the subs when they need them. I also always leave a detailed note for the teacher of what I covered that day and any important information that she should have. As far as turning | | down schools when the district calls, some days I just leave it on my answer machine. If I am already working somewhere else I will tell them. But if they are giving me a school that I really don't want to go to, I rather just leave the message on the answer recorder than to flat out say no. I have been subbing for about 2 years and have built up a good relationship with 3 schools in my area. I usually work at least 3-4 days a week now, and several teachers request me beforehand. It does take time. After awhile, seniority plays a huge role. I think I have moved up on many lists and get called more frequently. Hang in there-you sound like a great sub to have in the classroom!!!!!!
