"My sub'ing experiences"
By Ken

Clip to ScrapBook
Thanks, Jerry.

Today is one of those days when no one calls; this past year I had added myself to several districts and found that I have days when 3 schools call and I have to turn down 2, then days when no one calls.
I like the call-aheads and have some coming up.

I'd be interested in the experiences of others - does one alienate a school by turning down calls (all of my schools use humans to call; small schools the principals, larger - a person calling from home early AM or evening before).

Also - I got a cell phone and have tried to encourage calls to it as I find some like to call during the day

as they find a need for subs. They report that if no answer they'll move onto the next one.

I'm also finding that it is good to develop a good relationship with teachers; I already have several that are asking for me and would like to hear from or get tips on how to cultivate this type of relationship. I am thinking of some form with my name, perhaps a small picture, e-mail, phone and cell phone to leave along with notes on how the day went. I always leave notes but am wondering if something a bit "flashier" might help in getting call-backs.

Some of this might be construed as marketing - currently I like to leave detailed notes and always try to poke my head in the door to say "hi", etc. when I get back to that school. For the little kids I am also sending a "thank you" letter with my picture and our large Irish Wolfhound, Seannachie. Most kids get a real kick out of that and, hopefully, it also generates good will with the school & teacher.

Perhaps some of my questions are parts of other messages so will spend this "down" time looking at the threads.

Best, Ken Merwin
