7th Graders

Clip to ScrapBook
Dear Erin,
This is a tough age group, it is true. I teach sixth grade and have subbed before so I understand some of the challenges you will face. I'll give it my best shot. I think the best thing to do is to go in and
project a confident image. Try right away to get to know them and let them get to know you.Use humor, but don't come across as a pushover. Be respectful of them, but follow the discipline and classroom management procedures that the classroom teacher has already established. Let them know that you have communicated with the teacher and that he or she is expecting their best effort on the
assignments and that they will be graded. Also make it clear that you will be letting the teacher know who was cooperative and who was not, and that he or she has assured you that there will be consequences for their behavior.(Hopefully, all of this is true!) Introduce yourself to the teachers next door, and be friendly. You may need their assistance or advice at some point.
In a nutshell...be flexible, establish a rapport with the students and staff, demonstrate your professionalism and knowledge, and use humor in rough situations.Good luck!
